Should I send photocopies of my soc. sec. card, driver’s license, and a utility bill for a credit card?
I have been “approved” for a credit card I applied for, but according to the approval letter, the issuing bank requires a photocopy of all 3 of the above items before my account can be opened. Additionally, a deadline of about 3 weeks is imposed. Is this legitimate? The letter says this is required by federal law. It seems like either a reasonable way to prevent fraudulent accounts, or just a clever scam. The credit card and circumstances of application otherwise seem reputable.

It’s not really a scam. They perform a service for you – they file your application for the green card lottery each year. You can save the money and file the application yourself.

Put credit repair scams in one sentence.?
    Put this into one sentence.

    Credit Repair Scams

Credit repair scams offer to erase accurate negative information from your credit file so you can qualify for a credit card, auto loan, home mortgage, or a job.

The scam: The scam artists who promote these services can’t deliver. Only time, a deliberate effort, and a personal debt repayment plan will improve your credit. The companies that advertise credit repair services appeal to consumers with poor credit histories. Not only can’t they provide you with a clean credit record, but they also may be encouraging you to violate federal law. If you follow their advice by lying on a loan or credit application, misrepresenting your Social Security number, or getting an Employer Identification Number from the Internal Revenue Service under false pretenses, you will be committing fraud.

Do you mean you got an invitation to apply for a credit card with Capital One? If so, the only way they can check your credit to see if you qualify for their card is to have your social security number! LOL The mailing coming from a PO Box is not uncommon.

If you want to apply for a Capital One card, just go to their site if you are uncomfortable with this mailing.

  8. NETTA M says:

It depends, is it one of those bad crdit credit cards? I’ve got a Rewards 660 they required copy of utitlity bill (proof or residence) drivers license (proof of identity) and since I provided them with my home and cell # I had to send part of my cell bill. Also before they sent my card they called my home and cell #. Once I got my card I had to call from my home or my cell to activate. They can ask for what ever they want, it’s up to you whether you give it to them or not. If it’s a more reputable company they don’t ask for these things. If you’ve got bad credit, they put you throught the ringer, although I have other cards for bad credit and they didn’t ask for all of that. Google the company and see if there are any complaints from other card holders about them.
